First Afrikan Church uses The Afrikan Rhythms calendar as a guide to select scripture readings for each season.

Occasionally, we use a “pre-selected” set of scriptures from a guide called the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL)

The Revised Common Lectionary is a three-year cycle of weekly scripture readings used to varying degrees by the vast majority of mainline Protestant churches in Canada and the United States. The RCL is built around the annual cycle of seasons and holy days used by Christian churches to organize worship and commemorate the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus.. It allows millions of Christians across different denominations to hear the exact same scripture passages on any given Sunday

During most of the year, the scriptures include a reading from the Old Testament, a Psalm, a reading from Paul’s Letters , and a Gospel reading.

The RCL rotates through three years labeled Year A, Year B, and Year C. Each year features one of the Synoptic Gospels:

  • Year A: Focuses on the Gospel of Matthew.
  • Year B: Focuses on the Gospel of Mark.
  • Year C: Focuses on the Gospel of Luke. Note: The Gospel of John is heavily featured during Year B and at major festivals across all three years

We are currently in Year A. For a deeper look into the of the RCL, please click here.
