It is the pivotal eve nt in the Passion narrative and is proof for the legitimacy of the religio n. Many of us remember how important Easter Sunday was growing up and spe nt most of that day re-enacting Yeshua’s ascent from the grave through s ermons\, songs\, plays\, speeches\, etc. all meant for us to feel its sig nificance. Famous Christian author C. S. Lewis wrote\, “to preach Christ ianity meant primarily to preach the Resurrection...The Resurrection is th e central theme in every Christian sermon reported in the Acts. The Resurr ection and its consequences\, were the ‘gospel’ or good news which the Christians brought.”\n\nHowever\, for Africans in the Diaspora\, the co ncept of Resurrection has a much deeper meaning than the traditional sense . It moves beyond a single event happening to one person in history for th e cleansing of sin to a conceptual reality that signifies the ultimate sov ereignty of God. Just as God defeated death in the case of Jesus\, ultimat ely God will also defeat whatever may seem to overpower African people. Fo r oppressed persons the world over\, it is essential to have at their foun dation a belief in a God that can not only defeat oppression but is also o n the side of the oppressed. Yes\, Yeshua was crucified by the imperialist ic powers of his day but God raised him in victory despite this. Marcus Ga rvey understood the Resurrection as a call to African people to rise above the strenuous reality they faced. This could only be done through\nstrugg le and sacrifice\, which would succeed because God essentially has all pow er. Resurrection is a consciousness\, an inner spiritual reality that prov ides the impetus for us to continue struggling with the intent of progress ing. In her book\, Resurrection Hope\, theologian Kelly Brown Douglas und erstands this consciousness as prompting society to create a new and bette r life because God gives us the ability to transcend the ‘crucifixions ’ we experience as oppressed people daily. Our Ancestors innately unders tood Resurrection in this way and this is what fueled the many movements f or liberation birthed in the African\ncommunity. To walk in the shadow of Resurrection is to be covered in God’s ability to allow us to rise and t o rise consistently.\n\nResurrection is hope. Resurrection is struggle. Re surrection is power. This series attempts to translate the concept of Resu rrection in the many intersections of our daily lives. We shall take Resur rection beyond a single event that is celebrated on Easter morning with th e hiding of eggs\, dinner\, bright colored suits etc.\, and see it as a co gnitive and spiritual foundation that reinforces God’s restorative abili ty.
