Black and Woman’s History Months Bible Study and Sermon Series
February – March 2023
(Ash Wednesday: Feb 22nd)
Black and Woman’s history months are combined in this sermon and studies series. The intersectionality of Black and woman’s oppressions are obvious. Both groups are and have historically been engaged in continuous struggles for liberation both in America and around the world. Indeed, Black women bear the double burdens of gender and race (though neither of these, in and of themselves, are burdensome).
Artificial divisions were created to separate people – men from women, light from darker skin people, tall from short, skinny from rotund – as ways of privileging some people over others. Such divisions are artificial precisely because there is no scientific or historic evidence available to support such systems of differentiation. Yet such systems of division and differentiation exists in order to sustain structures of domination and ultimately control of one group over another. In truth, the Creator created all human beings in the divine image and likeness. In truth, we are all children of the Most High Creator. In truth, we are all valuable to the Creator and we all bring gifts to the table of human destiny.
This sermon series will address matters of freedom and liberation and the humanly constructed systems and structures of oppression in relation to the divine intention. We will endeavor to challenge First African Church to see that all humanity matters to the Creator and therefore ought to matter to us as well. In addition, we will continue to critique and call out those in the past and present who create and sustain the systems and structures of oppression as we fight for equal and human rights for all regardless of gender, race, sexual choice, or economic status. Along with our ancestor James Cone, we declare that “the gospel means freedom!”

Luke 13:11-13
11 And just then there appeared a woman with a spirit that had crippled her for eighteen years. She was bent over and was quite unable to stand up straight. 12 When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said, “Woman, you are set free from your ailment.” 13 When he laid his hands on her, immediately she stood up straight and began praising God.

1 Peter 2:16-17
“Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God. Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.”

Psalm 118:5-9
5 Out of my distress I called on the Lord; the Lord answered me and set me free (in a broad place). 6 With the Lord on my side I do not fear. What can mortals do to me? 7 The Lord is on my side to help me; I shall look in triumph on those who hate me. 8 It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to put confidence in mortals. 9 It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to put confidence in princes.

1 Corinthians 7:20-22
20 Let each of you remain in the condition in which you were called. 21 Were you a slave when called? Do not be concerned about it. Even if you can gain your freedom, make the most of it.[a] 22 For whoever was called in the Lord as a slave is a freed person belonging to the Lord, just as whoever was free when called is a slave belonging to Christ.
