ANNOUNCEMENTS:

 The Caribbean Ministry is inviting members who are interested in the planning for our upcoming Caribbean Celebration on Sunday, June 12, 2016 to join us every Monday, starting May 16th at 7:00pm via conference call at 515-739-1020 access code 504414

 

Monday,May 16th at 7:30 pm at FAC in the fellowship hall there will be a worship planning meeting for those interested in helping to plan and implement worship.

 

Call Conversations Bible Study Session Two: Inner Voices. Join us for our second class conversation on Call on Wednesday, May 18, 2016. Lunch and dinner is served in the community room 1 hour before class. Class sessions begin promptly at 1 and 7pm in the sanctuary.

 

The Worship Life Council selected Saturday, May 21, 2106 from 9:00 am to 12 noon as the time for our Worship Life Mbongi. All members of Worship Life i.e., Music Ministry, Tamba Issa,, Ngoma Lungunda, Drummers, Tana Dhari, Ushers, Sanctuary Choir, Harambee Greeters, Media Ministry and both Youth and Children’s Church Leaders as well as those who are interested in serving as liturgists are strongly encouraged to attend. It will be in FAC fellowship room.

 

 Book Signing Sunday, May 22, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. with Dr. Haki R. Madhubuti here at First Afrikan156_clinton_foundation_haki_r_madhubuti_by_nelson_chenault_0 Church. Dr. Madhubuti, formerly known as Don Lee, a major poet, essayist, editor and publisher throughout the Black Arts Movement. Madhubuti has published several collections of poetry and critical works with his most recent “Taking Bullets”. Madhubuti’s work is particularly acute about charting the growth of Blackness within the individual consciousness. We are glad to welcome him to First Afrikan Church.

 

 

 

Nsaa Sunday is June 26, 2016 at both the 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. worship services.  Our 2016 theme:  “Our Baobab Tree: Black Educational Institutions” Based in the Book of Revelations 22:1-5 Nasa Sunday honors the tradition of institution building from the 1860s Sabbath Schools, Historically Black Colleges and Independent African Centered Schools of the 60s, 70s, and today. Dr. Kofi Lomoty, Distinguished professor of Educational Leadership at Western University, former president of two HBCUs, and co-founder of the Council of Independent Black Institutions (CIBI) is our Community Nsaa recipient and presenter of the occasion is our guest in conversation with Rev. FAC is invited to join Big Miller Grove Baptist Church in a Community Yard Sale and Cook-off CANCEL Saturday, May 21, 2016 / RESCHEDULED for Saturday, June 25, 2016 . Vendors you can bring your own tables for a $25. Fee or use one of Big Miller tables for $30. Extra tables 45. (1st come 1st serve basis) .You can also enter a BBQ & Chili cook off and Cake contest for $25. and be eligible for 1st, 2nd & 3rd place prizes. The Southeast Region, National Black Presbyterian Caucus will hold its biennial Conference on July 15-17, 2016 at the Crowne Plaza Jacksonville Airport Hotel, 14670 Duval Road, Jacksonville, FL. We are pleased that we have been able to negotiate an excellent rate of $95.00 per night, per room. In order to receive this rate, you must register for the conference and reserve your room by June 1, 2016.
The conference will begin on that Friday at 1:00pm. The theme is “Responding to the Signs of the Time in the Southeast Region – Trusting in God” (2 Tim. 3:1, 14-17) A planned intergenerational program that we hope will be spiritual, joyful and educational; one that we hope will enhance the spiritual growth of each attendee. Workshop topics include: Growing Churches/Evangelism

Challenges for African American Congregations (The State of the Church)

Social Justice (Societal Issues Facing the African American Community – guns, drugs, etc)

Church Polity – The Ordination Process; Responding to Marriage Equality

Registration cost is $175.00 for Adults ($200.00 after June 1), and $50.00 for youth and seminary students. This fee includes conference materials, the luncheon on Saturday, and the Lawrence Bottoms Award Banquet. The deadline for registration is June 30, 2016. There will be no on-site registration.
